Alphonso Davies will not be joining Real Madrid as a free agent this summer after signing a new five-and-a-half-year contract at Bayern Munich.
Davies was into the last six months of his current Bayern contract and has been heavily pursued by a number of Europe's top sides.
Real Madrid have long been touted as the leading suitors for the Canada international, while there's been whispers of Premier League interest in the past.
Bayern appeared resigned to the idea of losing Davies at one stage, but as negotiations over an extended deal at the Allianz Arena continue, confidence grew that he might see his long-term future in Germany after all.
Reports last month suggested that an agreement was inching closer, and Bayern have confirmed in a club statement - a day after the January transfer window closed - that Davies has committed to a new five-and-a-half-year deal that ties him to Bayern until the summer of 2030.
"I am very happy to have extended my contract at this great club," Davies told club channels. "I came to FC Bayern when I was 18 and just wanted to learn as much as possible every day to become one of the best in my position. Now I'm looking forward to another five years together. I’ve already achieved a lot here, but there’s more to come."
Christoph Freund, Bayern's sporting director, added: "Alphonso Davies has become one of the best players in the world in his position at Bayern and has attracted a lot of interest. The fact he wants to continue here with us shows Bayern’s status in international football and that Alphonso has found his sporting home in Munich.”
The news comes as a significant blow to Madrid, albeit not unexpected given the recent change in narrative. Los Blancos have started to accept defeat in pursuit of Davies recently and have their sights set on Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold instead.
For Bayern, however, Madrid's threat may not be over just yet. They are among the sides chasing versatile midfielder Joshua Kimmich who, like Davies, is approaching the end of his current contract. Bayern sporting director Christoph Freund has offered public confidence that Kimmich will follow Davies in re-signing, but there appears to be more work to do to retain the Germany international.
