La Liga is now more competitive than it has been in recent years, and it is clear that Barcelona and Real Madrid have young cores that will compete neck to neck for at least the next decade.

The Catalans, as the defending champions, are one of the best teams in the world while Real Madrid are now back to having a daunting squad after making signings in the summer.

With a new manager and a positive style of play, moreover, there is no reason they should not be considered outright favourites.

Atletico Madrid’s spending frenzy in the summer, however, means that it could well be a three-horse race for the title this season for the Colchoneros boast a high-quality squad as well.

Sommer’s verdict

Speaking to the media earlier this week, Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer was asked to make his prediction on who would reign as the La Liga champions this season. While the race is indeed tighter than ever before now, he did not bat an eye in picking Los Blancos.

“Who will win La Liga this season? Real Madrid, again,” the player said (h/t Madrid Zone), making his prediction very clear.

Winning the league, as always, will require consistency throughout the season and it is that very discipline that Xabi Alonso hopes to bring into Real Madrid’s dressing room this season.

The adaptation period, however, is inevitable and Los Blancos must look to minimise its duration to the least possible.

Barcelona’s form is the biggest threat to Real Madrid’s chances, but with the summer recruitments the club has made, there is no reason they will not back themselves to down Hansi Flick’s side.

Notably, Sommer is one of the players who had the biggest hand in eliminating the Catalans from the UEFA Champions League last season.

Sommer will compete with Thibaut Courtois for the Yachine Trophy later this year as both players have been nominated for the prestigious goalkeeper’s award by France Football.
