FLW's Plymouth Argyle fan pundit has been discussing the seemingly imminent transfer of Adam Randell to Bristol City.
This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk‘ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Plymouth Argyle midfielder Adam Randell is in advanced talks ahead of a move to Bristol City.
Football Insider claimed on Thursday that the 24-year-old has been offered the opportunity to remain in the Championship next season with the Robins, after his Argyle side suffered relegation to League One.
Randell is a Plymouth academy graduate, and has evolved into a key member of the Pilgrims' starting XI over the last few years, but is entering the final year of his contract at Home Park.
We asked our Plymouth Argyle fan pundit, Luke Hodge: 'Plymouth midfielder Adam Randell is in advanced talks to sign for Bristol City. Thoughts? Is he good enough to be starting for a team who will be chasing the Championship play-offs again? What kind of fee do you hope to see from the Randell deal?'
Hodge said: "Adam Randell's potential transfer to Bristol City certainly sparks a mixed reaction.
"I'll take some stick for this, but in my opinion, he is the best player at Argyle, and at just 24, he has ample opportunity for growth and improvement.
"Although he had a challenging season last year - he definitely wasn't at his best - I think it's important to consider the circumstances he faced.
"He found himself frequently isolated in the middle of the park, which is the most demanding role on the pitch. He often tried taking on too much responsibility, attempting to defend, attack, create, press and break up play, ultimately leaving him fatigued.
"Whilst opinions may vary on his readiness for a team aiming for Championship play-offs, I genuinely believe that he has the potential to be a significant success at Bristol City.
"I anticipate that any doubters will be silenced over the next couple of years, as he continues to develop."
When asked about what sort of transfer fee Argyle can hope to receive for Randell, Hodge said: "Regarding the transfer fee, whilst one would hope for a seven-figure sum, the reality of him being in his last year of his contract and discussions around relegation clauses, may lead to a fee more in the line with what was received from Wrexham for Ryan Hardie (£700k).
"Therefore, a six-figure sum in the region of £500-700k seems more realistic, which is still a minimal fee for a very good player with his best years ahead of him."
Having played 84 games at Championship level over the last two seasons of his relatively young career, Randell has certainly built up a good understanding of what is required from him in the second tier.
As mentioned by Hodge, his work-rate - sometimes to his detriment in terms of his energy consumption - is outstanding, and that will certainly go a long way to endearing himself with the Bristol City faithful.
With exceptional central midfielder Jason Knight being strongly linked with a move to Everton, Randell could be his natural successor at Ashton Gate.
Those would be big shoes to fill, but with still so much room for improvement and time to do it in for the Argyle star, the Robins could be about to complete yet another trademark piece of highly shrewd business.
City have been excellent at finding value for money deals in recent windows, and Randell could well be the latest edition of that this summer.
