Pep Guardiola hits back at reporter over ‘trophy-less’ comments about Manchester City’s last season | OneFootball

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was keen to hit back and correct one reporter during a recent press conference concerning claims of a ‘trophy-less’ last season.

The Catalan coach is looking towards his latest campaign with the Etihad Stadium club and arguably his most challenging task to date as Manchester City manager, as he aims to rebuild towards the exceptionally high standards established over recent years.

Largely as a result of widespread injury and fitness problems, City found themselves significantly off the pace in the chase for the Premier League title last season, and had to settle for UEFA Champions League football secured on the final day of the campaign.

As such, the season went down as the first campaign at Manchester City since Pep Guardiola’s first year at the club in 2016/17 that the squad had failed to win a single major trophy, having lost in a second successive FA Cup Final at the hands of Crystal Palace along the way.

But speaking during a recent press conference, Sky Sports News’ Kaveh Solhekol pointed out that City failed to win a trophy for the first time in eight years during 2024/25 – a claim that Pep Guardiola was visibly unhappy with.

“No, it’s not true, my friend, I’m sorry to tell you,” Guardiola snapped back before the question was completely put to him.

“You would like it, but it’s not true,” he added, before pointing out, “We won the Community Shield! Thank you.”

“Apart from that, yeah I know. I know it’s not enough, but we won it,” Guardiola closed.

Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City players have the opportunity to claim major silverware before the start of the European schedule, as they continue in their work towards the FIFA Club World Cup crown.

Having established victories over Wydad AC and Al Ain in their opening two matches at the tournament scoring eight goals without reply, matchday three brings the challenge of Juventus as City look to secure top spot in the group.

The last-16 of the expanded tournament will see City take on either of Spain’s Real Madrid, Austria’s RB Salzburg, and Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal – who could bring a reunion with some familiar faces from Europe including former Etihad Stadium defender Joao Cancelo.
