Victor Osimhen could provide the key to Liverpool selling Darwin Nunez in the summer transfer window.
The Nigeria striker is set to leave Napoli after falling out with the club last summer, but none of Europe’s top teams seem to be interested in a move.
Galatasaray, however, are very serious about bringing the 26-year-old back to Turkey following a successful loan spell last season. He played a key role in the side’s league and cup double triumph, scoring 37 goals in all competitions.
The Lions are said to have already agreed personal terms with Osimhen, but have seen a bid worth €60 million rejected by Napoli, according to Fabrizio Romano. While “talks continue”, Al Hilal are willing to meet the player’s €75m release clause.
It would be a shame to see one of the best strikers in Europe not playing in a top five league, but his destination won’t matter a great deal to Liverpool, who will be watching from the sidelines with interest.
That’s because Napoli are lining up a move for Darwin Nunez, provided they can sell Osimhen. The Uruguay international is clearly surplus to Arne Slot’s plans, having only started eight Premier League games as Liverpool romped to the title last season.
Napoli have tabled a bid worth €50m (£43.2m) plus €5m (£4.3m) in bonuses, according to Italian football reporter Gianluca Di Marzio. The Merseyside outfit apparently want something closer to €60m (£51.7m).
However, there is a potential spoiler to the possible deal, especially if Liverpool demand too high a transfer fee. Napoli are still discussing the possibility of signing Lorenzo Lucca from Udinese, which would cost them roughly half the amount of money when both the transfer fee and wages are taken into account.
That said, Romano claims that Darwin is a “top priority” for the Partenopei, who are keeping “talks active”.
A curious subplot to this transfer story is another club are also watching on with interest: Cesc Fabregas’ Como. They are hoping to sign Alvaro Morata from Galatasaray once the Osimhen deal is sewn up.
