Another major league was decided over a hectic weekend as PSG were crowned champions of France for a 12th time.

But who were the individuals who shone to make our best XI from the top five leagues?

Paulo Gazzaniga (Girona)

Outstanding in Girona’s 2-0 win at Las Palmas, he showcased all facets of his game. His penalty save in particular was a big standout but the cherry on top was his heart-stopping Cruyff turn in his own six-yard box to evade danger. Ice cool.

RB: Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)

Back in the line-up after missing out in El Clásico, he showed what was missing with an assured veteran performance, coming in and doing exactly what Carlo Ancelotti required. Strong defensively, he also contributed an assist for the only goal of the game.

CB: Dante (Nice)

A deserved Man of the Match award winner in his side’s 3-1 win, the Brazilian is somehow still going strong at the highest level – nullifying defences and using every inch of his experience at the age of 40. He even managed a rare goal to put the cherry on top too – his latest performance all the more impressive when you remember he suffered a career-threatening ACL injury three years ago.

CB: Malick Thiaw (Milan)

One of the few standout performers in Milan’s scoreless draw with Juventus. He has had his critics recently and not without reason but the German was excellent in keeping the dangerous Dušan Vlahović quiet and marshalled the Rossoneri’s high defensive line impeccably. A goal-line clearance was vital in keeping the clean sheet and share of the spoils.

LB: Joško Gvardiol (Manchester City)

Having admitted recently that this season has been a big adjustment for him as he acclimatises himself with the new position he is being asked to play under Pep Guardiola but he is really vindicating the faith being placed in him. So assured on the ball, technically astute and he also scored the crucial opener at Nottingham Forest with a fine header.

CM: Maximilian Arnold (Wolfsburg)

He was the main man in his side’s stirring late comeback win at Freiburg. Got the revival started with a glorious free-kick and then provided the assist for the winner. The captain remains instrumental in so many ways for his side.

CM: Kevin Stöger (Bochum)

Speaking of sublime free-kicks from the Bundesliga over the weekend, the Austrian ace joined Arnold in grabbing one of his own. He also added a second goal in his side’s 3-2 victory and was the best player on the park by some distance. It was further evidence that he is too good for a side in their precarious position in the table.

RW: Álex Baena (Villarreal)

What a talent the 22-year-old is. It was no surprise in the wake of his incredible performance against Rayo Vallecano (in which he provided the assist for all three goals!) that he was being closely linked with a move to Barcelona. Those links are not going to go away and a big move is surely coming sooner rather than later.

CAM: Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Inter)

The festivities have well and truly begun at Inter in the wake of sealing the Scudetto and their midfield maestro produced the party tricks in the 2-0 win over Torino, getting both goals. The first came with a satisfying volley before he netted from the penalty spot to take his tally for the campaign to a personal best 13 – it is a long time since the Nerazzurri had a midfielder both this prolific and consistent.

LW: Elbasan Rashani (Clermont)

The winger was in unstoppable form for Clermont in their 4-1 thrashing of Reims. A menace on the left flank with his willingness to receive the ball and dribble at defenders, it was the ability with the ball at his feet which won a penalty which was scored before he helped himself to two late goals.

ST: Alexander Isak (Newcastle)

Sheffield United’s struggling defence was exposed ruthlessly by Newcastle in their 5-1 loss which relegated them and it was the Magpies’ super Swede who did much of the damage. He netted with a classy finish for his first of the afternoon before keeping his cool from the penalty spot after a VAR check to take his tally for the campaign to 19.
