In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo claimed that Newcastle United are serious about recruiting Atletico Madrid playmaker Conor Gallagher. It has been stated that the Magpies are eyeing a move to bring the English midfielder to St. James’ Park in this summer transfer window.

Gallagher’s Impressive Form In La Liga Last Season

Gallagher managed to impress at times with his performances at the heart of Diego Simeone’s midfield last season. The England international registered four goals and earned six assists in 47 matches for Atletico Madrid in the previous campaign across all fronts.

The 25-year-old deserves some credit for making 45 tackles, 23 blocks and 20 interceptions in La Liga last season. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield after completing 85% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top flight (stats via fbref.com).

His current contract at the Madrid club will run out in the summer of 2029. Thus, Newcastle would have to launch a big offer if they want to land the English talent this off-season.

Will Gallagher Be A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?

Gallagher is a tough-tackling midfielder who can scan the danger well to earn the ball back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot. The English talent is a good passer of the ball as well and can chip in by scoring and creating his fair share of goals from midfield. However, he needs to find a way to improve his decision-making in the final third.

We can expect Gallagher to add more quality and depth to Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe’s midfield department. He is more than capable of challenging for a regular starting spot at the Tyneside club next season.

Gallagher already knows the Premier League well and won’t take much time to settle into life at St. James’ Park if the Magpies can find a way to get him on board this summer.
