Newcastle United are not interested in a deal to bring former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher back to the Premier League, despite reports.

Eddie Howe has been linked with a move to sign the Atletico Madrid midfielder this summer.

Gallagher joined the Spanish side from Chelsea 12 months ago but failed to command an automatic role in Diego Simeone’s side.

The England international started just 19 games in La Liga as the Rojiblancos finished third in Spain’s top division. He scored three times and provided three assists in those appearances and is well respected in the Atletico Madrid squad.

However, return to the Premier League has been mooted for the 25-year-old, as he looks to secure his place in the England squad for next summer’s World Cup. Spanish journalist Javi Gómara has claimed Newcastle are among the clubs weighing up a bid.

After a frustrating start to the summer transfer window, Newcastle are keen to ramp up their efforts to improve the squad.

Talks have been held for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, while Anthony Elanga is nearing a £55m move from Nottingham Forest. However, journalist Ben Jacobs has confirmed that Gallagher is not a target for the Magpies at this stage.

Tottenham Hotspur have also been mentioned as a potential destination for the midfielder.
