Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing PSG striker Goncalo Ramos amid the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s future at the club.
The Sweden international returned to the Magpies’ training ground on Monday morning after arriving back in the UK from Spain on Saturday afternoon.
Isak had been training alone at the headquarters of his former club, Real Sociedad, on his own, after refusing to join Newcastle‘s pre-season tour of Asia.
The 25-year-old travelled to San Sebastian to work with his own staff on recovering from a “minor thigh injury”. He reportedly wanted to explore his options in the transfer market and does not want to enter talks over a new contract.
Newcastle have been working on signing a new striker in case Isak leaves St James’ Park, with Liverpool hoping to sign him this summer.
The Reds saw a £110m offer rejected last week, but don’t plan on returning with another offer as they await contact from the Tyneside outfit on the possibility of a deal.
Newcastle reportedly made an unsuccessful bid worth up to nearly £70m for RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko last week. They face stiff opposition from Manchester United for the player’s signature.
Having also been frustrated in their pursuit of Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, Newcastle are looking at other potential targets, with the Daily Mail reporting that Goncalo Ramos is “on a list of alternatives” to Sesko, should they fail in capturing the Slovenian.
They looked at the Portugal international three years ago before signing Isak, and PSG are “open to him leaving this summer”. The 24-year-old came on as a late substitute for the Parisians in their 5-0 win over Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League final in May.
