New injury blow for Rangers leaves case critical at Ibrox

Rangers’ disastrous season continues with the latest ridiculous news that John Souttar’s injury could very well mean the side is down to just one defender in Ben Davies for the final three matches of the campaign.

That would mean lining up with Davies and likely Dujon Sterling in the heart of defence, and with no John Lundstram for two matches and almost certainly done at Rangers with the cup final coming, Rangers’ squad options are a tad case critical now.

Sterling, who could have replaced Lundstram in midfield, now gets deployed in defence, and Rangers have the underwhelming Mohamed Diomande and the disinterested Nico Raskin as the only available midfielders for the next two fixtures.

That means no Connor Goldson, Leon Balogun, John Souttar, John Lundstram, Abdallah Sima, Danilo, Ryan Jack, Rabbi Matondo, Oscar Cortes and Alex Lowry to name just 10 players we’re aware of that are almost certainly unavailable.

We’ve probably missed one or two.

Which more ridiculously means it’s just Tavernier, Sterling, King, Davies, Ridvan, Barisic, Raskin, Diomande, Cantwell, Lawrence, Wright, Roofe, McCausland, Silva and Dessers available and that’s about it.

14 senior players, aside King, is all Rangers will have to play with for the last two or three matches if none of these injuries clear up.

It’s a bit of a mess, and given it includes a cup final against them lot as well, we can safely say our already non-existent optimism has taken another battering and we really can’t see our ‘team’ lifting the trophy this month.

We’re sure Clement will produce yet another bonkers XI and even more baffling subs, and the wheels on the bus will go round and round.

But that said, Souttar’s injury really has caused even further chaos with a defence that was already flimsy and creaking at best, and adding Lundstram’s suspension and the appalling reshuffling going on, Rangers really are in a complete state.

But hey, onwards and upwards right?
