“We’re delighted that Mio sees his future at Werder and that he’s elected to stay long-term, in addition to being convinced by our path forward. Mio is a very talented goalkeeper and we have full confidence that he will be able to prove his talents in the Bundesliga. We're very pleased with Mio’s performances, as well as with the overall quality within our goalkeeping team, who we’re planning on heading into the upcoming season with,” said Niemeyer.

Goalkeeper coach Christian Vander also sees plenty of potential in Backhaus. “Mio has everything that a modern goalkeeper needs. He works hard to improve and is an important part of our goalkeeper team. He puts a lot of effort into every training session and wants to improve every day.”

Backhaus is also looking forward to remaining at Werder, saying: “Werder laid out a clear plan for me right from the start, detailing what my path here could look like – that impressed me and gave me the confidence that I would have the optimum conditions to develop here. I know that the level of competition here is high, but that’s exactly what motivates me. I’m here to learn, to prove myself and, in the long term, to pay back the trust that the club has shown in me.”

The Germany U20 international came to SVW from Alemannia Aachen in 2018 and made his way through several of the club’s youth teams. He spent 2023/24 on loan at FC Volendam, before returning to Bremen at the start of last season.
