Manchester United are reported to have tabled a “three-year offer” to French midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

Currently representing his country at Euro 2024, the 29-year-old became a free agent this week after his contract with Juventus expired.

When asked about his future following France’s victory over Belgium on Monday evening, Rabiot stated his sole focus was on the European Championships, but did reveal he was still in communication with Juventus officials.

However, Nick Semeraro, an Italian journalist, contends United have launched an approach for the midfielder, who has long-standing links to a move to Old Trafford.

Tweet – “MUFC has made a three-year offer for Adrien Rabiot. On the French side, in addition to other Premier League clubs, there is always Real Madrid.”

Rabiot was linked with United in the summer of 2022 – Erik ten Hag’s first transfer window – but a move never materialised, with Casemiro signed in a blockbuster move from Real Madrid instead.

These links then resurfaced in 2023 as the Juventus midfielder’s contract was, once again, set to expire.

That time the Old Lady were able to agree an extension with Rabiot before his deal ran out, but they have not been able to repeat this trick this summer.

From United’s perspective, a physical, defensively-minded midfielder, with high-level Champions League and international experience, on a free transfer, is a smart choice. And with Casemiro likely to depart Old Trafford for Saudi Arabia this summer, there will be a gap in Ten Hag’s squad for such a player as Rabiot.

United’s finances are set to be stretched this summer by the pressure of the Premier League’s profits and sustainability rules (PSR). This means any outbound transfers will be important to generating funds to then bring in new signings.

If the club were able to overhaul their midfield by selling Casemiro and Christian Eriksen (both 32) and bringing in Rabiot (29) on a free and a prodigious talent like Benfica’s Joao Neves (19), it would have a transformative effect on a key area of weakness for United.

With Rabiot set to pass the dreaded 30 milestone next season, it makes sense for Old Trafford officials to have only offered a three-year deal, rather than a long-term one as the club has in the past.
