Manchester United’s pursuit of a new goalkeeper has taken an intriguing turn, with reports from Fichajes claiming the club is ‘determined’ to secure the services of Real Madrid’s Andriy Lunin. With Andre Onana’s performances under scrutiny, United appear poised to make a concrete bid for the Ukrainian shot-stopper.

Onana’s tenure at Old Trafford has been tumultuous. Since his arrival in the summer of 2023, the Cameroonian has been criticised for costly mistakes, leading to doubts over his long-term future under manager Ruben Amorim. Former United defender Paul Parker did not hold back in his assessment, branding Onana ‘useless’ and further fuelling speculation about his potential exit.

According to Fichajes, United are eager to act decisively and have prepared a €40m (£34m) bid for Lunin. Their interest in the 26-year-old is not new, but they are now looking to capitalise on his situation at Real Madrid.
Madrid recently extended Lunin’s contract until 2030, indicating their long-term faith in the goalkeeper. However, despite playing a crucial role in Los Blancos’ La Liga and Champions League triumphs last season, he has struggled for regular game time this term. With Thibaut Courtois firmly established as Madrid’s number one, Lunin reportedly desires a move where he can be the undisputed starter.

Fichajes suggests Madrid could be open to selling their backup goalkeeper if the offer is deemed ‘considerable’. Given United’s urgency to reinforce their goalkeeping options, the prospect of a summer move seems increasingly realistic.
At 6ft 3in, Lunin possesses the physicality required for the Premier League. His shot-stopping ability, distribution, and command of the penalty area make him an appealing option for United, particularly under a manager like Amorim who values ball-playing goalkeepers.

However, there are lingering concerns. Having spent much of his career as Courtois’ understudy, some question whether Lunin has the mentality to be a long-term No.1 at a club of United’s stature. Despite this, his statistics from last season suggest he is more than capable of handling the responsibility, outperforming Courtois in several key metrics.
For many United fans, this is an exciting prospect. Lunin is a keeper with immense potential, and his situation at Madrid presents an opportunity the club should not pass up.
United’s goalkeeping situation has been a source of anxiety this season, with Onana failing to inspire confidence. While he arrived with high expectations, his performances in the Premier League and Champions League have been riddled with errors.
Lunin, on the other hand, has already demonstrated he can handle pressure at the highest level. His performances last season in Madrid’s title-winning campaign were nothing short of outstanding. A move to United could allow him to finally step out of Courtois’ shadow and prove himself as an elite goalkeeper.
For United, securing Lunin would be a statement of intent. The reported £34m fee is a reasonable investment for a player entering his prime years. If Amorim and his coaching staff can nurture his talent, United may finally have found the long-term successor to David de Gea. The only question that remains—will Madrid let him go?
