One of the Owls' youngsters is already verging on joining the former Premier League champions.

Sheffield Wednesday are under threat of losing yet another of their young talents to Manchester City after a deal for Caelan Cadamarteri was secured.

Clubs like the Citizens, with their level of finances, can afford to hoover up all the young talent that they can.

Only a very select group of players that come through any development pathway in this country go on to play professionally, but someone has to be the best of the bunch, and City, by signing as many of them as they can, increase their chances of having one of them.

Man City chasing Sheffield Wednesday defender Romario Collins

Their next target is Owls youngster Romario Collins. Pep Guardiola's side are going after the defender, according to a report from The Star.

Should he make the move to Greater Manchester, Collins would be the second Wednesday teenager to be snapped up by City this summer.

Caelan-Kole Cadamarteri, the son of former Premier League and EFL forward Danny Cadamarteri, is set to leave Hillsborough in a deal which will net the club £1.5 million. The 15-year-old's move will be completed later this month, according to The Star.

Southampton are also set to get in on the act of poaching Wednesday's youth team products. Sutura Kakay is being pursued by the Saints, among others, again, per The Star. He turned down the chance to become a pro at Hillsborough.

If City pull off their move for Collins, which is expected to net the Owls a six-figure compensation fee, that and the departures of Cadamarteri and Kakay would bring around £2 million in for Wednesday, who are in desperate need of funds. They are under three transfer embargoes for failure to pay various parties.

Alan Nixon reported prior to June payday, which saw a number of players not receive their wages on time, that Dejphon Chansiri needed £5 million to pay his bills.

Sheffield Wednesday may become reliant on offloading their youngsters

Wednesday's youth setup has produced some promising talents in recent years.

Pierce Charles, at 19, is Northern Ireland's first-choice goalkeeper and has been scouted by a number of Premier League and Bundesliga clubs. Bailey Cadamarteri, 20, another of Danny's sons, is looking like he'll at least be a solid EFL striker throughout his career.

Given the current financial struggles, it's a source of revenue - selling their top talents - that they may have to rely on going forward, especially youth products.

Sales of these players count as pure profit on Wednesday's books in this era of Profit & Sustainability rules.

It's not a scenario that clubs would ideally like to find themselves, having to auction off their best in order to try and stay afloat, but the Owls are very much in a needs must scenario right now with Chansiri at the helm. It may be what's required to avoid further penalties.
