Napoli star Romelu Lukaku revisited some of his past moves and dished on his time at Napoli and Antonio Conte in an interview with Corriere dello Sport.
“The preparation is a lot more important in Italy and makes everything more interesting. I despised playing with the back to the goal before meeting my current coach. But he was very clear that I had to improve on that at Chelsea, or I wouldn’t see the field. It went from being my weakness to a strength. I don’t think it affects my numbers. I try to be dominant.”
Lukaku was confident he’d end up at Napoli, even though the negotiation was laborious.
“It’s part of the business, but I knew I would come here. If a club no longer wants you, they also wish to decide when and where you’ll go. Instead, you don’t have the chance to do so if I you ask out. They wear you down. Teams are in contact with the media. It doesn’t take much to create issues and portray the wrong image of a player.”
Lukaku dispatched the rumours about butting heads with José Mourinho.
“He’s a winner, and he has coached me twice. Something happened between him and somebody else, and I didn’t want to get in the middle of it. I’ll never speak ill of him. He didn’t have a superb squad at Roma, but he went all the way. I wish him the best.”
Lukaku also wishes to bury the hatchet with Inter.
“I’ve never hated them. If somebody spoke in that sense, it wasn’t me. I haven’t heard from Lautaro Martinez since my departure. He’s a great player and kid. He deserves everything he’s accomplishing and worked hard for it.”
