Jamie Vardy finally ended Leicester’s long wait for a home goal in the Premier League, helping them to a 2-0 win over Southampton in a clash between two already-relegated sides.
The 38-year-old striker smashed his shot into the roof of the net after 17 minutes - Leicester’s first home league goal at the King Power since early December.
Midway through the first half, referee David Webb took an accidental knock to the head from Jordan Ayew, who was chasing the play.
Vardy had to blow the whistle and call for treatment for the referee, who couldn’t continue. That meant fourth official Sam Barrott had to take over for the rest of the game.
Just before half-time, the Foxes doubled their lead. Ayew’s free-kick bounced back off the Saints’ wall, and he reacted quickest, drilling a half-volley into the bottom corner.
The defeat confirms Southampton will finish bottom of the table – matching an unwanted record for the third time – and they still need a point to avoid ending the season with fewer than Derby’s infamous 11-point total from 2007–08.
