Match preview ahead of the game away to VfB Stuttgart

SV Werder will be looking to take the latest tough test in their stride following last weekend’s impressive victory at home to Eintracht Frankfurt. Therefore, they should head into this Sunday’s contest away to VfB Stuttgart brimming with confidence (13.03.25, kick-off 15:30 CEST). Ole Werner demands the same courage from his side as they displayed in the teams’ 2-2 draw earlier this term. Read our full preview below.

Ole Werner on the task at hand away to VfB: “It will be tough, but nice. Both teams look to play precise passes and we’ll be up against last season’s runners-up. They have a lot of quality, both as a team and on an individual level. We want to do what we did earlier this season and give them a good game. At the same time, we know that it won’t be easy away from home.”

Team news: As was the case for the previous fixture as his side convincingly won 2-0 at home to Eintracht Frankfurt, Ole Werner can call upon nearly all of his squad. The sole absentee remains Milos Veljkovic due to calf problems. Romano Schmid and Anthony Jung were managing their workloads on Friday but are both available for selection in Stuttgart.

Recent meetings: Looking at both the results of recent clashes between these sides, as well the overall head-to-head, makes for a very even story. Werder and VfB have each emerged victorious twice from the last six meetings, while they have also played out two draws. Both sides have scored eight times during that period. The reverse fixture at the Weserstadion, which finished in a 2-2 draw, was rather reflective of the sides’ inability to be separated of late. Both clubs have won 40 of the meetings across the entire history of this fixture with 35 draws also be played out. Whoever clinches victory on Sunday would therefore not only get their noses in front in terms of the league standings but also with regard to the historical head-to-head record.

Solid this season against UCL participants: Werder have more than held their own against the Bundesliga’s five teams to compete in the Champions League this term – a win in Stuttgart would see them register points eight, nine and 10 against the opponents in the current campaign. Alongside the draw with VfB, SVW have managed further results when faced with reigning champions Bayer 04 Leverkusen (W1, D1) and Borussia Dortmund (D2) and will have sights set on points against RB Leipzig on matchday 33. FC Bayern are the only of these teams to have defeated Werder twice.
