Jadon Sancho took pay cut to force Chelsea move – Fabrizio Romano | OneFootball

It has been revealed that Jadon Sancho has taken a pay cut in order to advance his loan move to Chelsea this summer.

Having recently returned to Manchester United following his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund, it appeared as if Sancho had found his way back into the good graces of manager Erik ten Hag following last season’s fallout. But while he played an active role in the team’s pre-season tour, he was since left out of Ten Hag’s Premier League squad in both of the first two matches of the season.

On transfer deadline day, Chelsea sealed a season-long loan agreement for Sancho, which included an obligation to buy the winger once the loan lapses.

While it was reported last night that Chelsea would be covering a large majority of Sancho’s wages during his loan, more details on those wages have since come to light.

This morning, Fabrizio Romano revealed to CaughtOffside that Sancho agreed to take a pay cut in order to get his move to Stamford Bridge over the line.

“Man United just wanted to move on from Sancho as they understood the player only wanted to leave. This is why they accepted this solution but still at their condition,” Romano explained.

He then confirmed: “So it all started from the player as he really wanted to join Chelsea, it was his priority, and it’s true that the player reduced his salary for this move, as it was the only way to make it happen.”

According to The Athletic, it appears as if Romano’s sentiment may indeed be correct.

“Jadon Sancho is a boyhood Chelsea fan born in the south London district of Camberwell, where he formed an early friendship with fellow local football prodigy Tammy Abraham. Calling Stamford Bridge his professional home has always been an appealing notion,” the article read.

“There should be no shortage of motivation on the player’s side. Sancho has made a significant financial sacrifice to escape a bad situation at United and secure a chance to kickstart his career.”

Sancho’s departure from Old Trafford is probably in United’s best interest, with the emergence of Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo as strong contenders for the starting 11 while Marcus Rashford remains a regular starter and Antony continues to fight for a place in Ten Hag’s plans.

While Chelsea reportedly agreed to a fee of £25 million for Sancho at the end of his loan, well short of the £73 million United paid for him three years ago, it will be good for United to get some money back for him while alleviating themselves of most of his wages for the season.

Ultimately, given his fallout with Ten Hag, it may be best for the United squad to see Sancho depart if it means an end to some of the locker room drama that haunted the club last season.
