Cole Palmer insisted he’s still “full of belief” he can help England when called upon, despite an underwhelming group stage campaign for the Three Lions.

England are one of the favourites to win the Euros, and despite topping Group C they haven’t impressed with their performances, scoring just two goals across their three games so far.

They take on Slovakia on Sunday in the last 16, with many hoping the knockout stages will see an improvement in performance levels from Gareth Southgate’s side.

Palmer full of belief

Despite another largely poor showing against Slovenia on Tuesday night, Palmer’s cameo from the bench was certainly a positive.

The 22-year-old has had to be patient after being overlooked completely for the first two games, and was once again on the bench against Slovenia, but with 20 minutes to go Palmer was handed his opportunity as he replaced Bukayo Saka.

Palmer impressed on his major tournament debut for the senior side as he injected some much needed urgency into the team and showed glimpses of the creativity he possesses.

Palmer impressed off the bench against Slovenia and will be hoping for more opportunities.

He could have won it late on with a chance you perhaps would have expected him to put away, but Palmer insisted afterwards that he can help England whenever he’s called upon.

“I’m still full of belief,” Palmer said in quotes picked up by Chelsea’s website.

“After the season I’ve had I don’t see any reason why I should be down.

“So I will just try and stay positive and when I get on the pitch, try to make an impact.”

Palmer added that he would also play whatever role Gareth Southgate asks him to in the remainder of the tournament.

“I just tried to play my game when I went on and I think I did that.”

“I tried to create chances and be positive.

“There’s great players everywhere in the team, so I’m just supporting whoever is on the pitch [when substitute] and when I get my chance I need to try and show what I can do.”

Palmer has certainly given Southgate a headache heading into the last 16, and it’s hard to imagine him not featuring heavily in the remainder of the tournament.
