Man City: Mateo Kovacic (achilles), Jack Grealish, Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips (left at home).
Wydad AC: Omar Al-Somah (visa issues), Ayoub Bouchta (fitness), Hamza Al-Hanouri (doubt).
City come into this match off the back of just one defeat since March 8, unfortunately for them that loss came in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace. The Citizens were in formidable form in the Premier League as their late season resurgence saw them qualify for the Champions League.
Three-time CAF Champions League winners Wydad AC head into the tournament off the back of two defeats to European opponents, after losing to FC Porto and Sevilla in consecutive friendlies. They ended up a distant third in Botola Pro 1, the Moroccan first division.
Man City (4-3-3): Ederson; Lewis, Khusanov, Gvardiol, Ait-Nouri; Reijnders, Gonzalez; Cherki, Foden, Doku; Haaland.
Wydad AC (4-2-4): El Motie; Moufi, Meijers, Harkass, Boucheta; Malsa, Moubarik; Amrabat, Arthur, Rayhi; Obeng.
Pep Guardiola spoke about the future of Jack Grealish ahead of the game, who has been left out of the squad for the Club World Cup: “The fact is in the last two seasons he didn’t play much minutes. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days, every three days and show again the quality he has.
On coming up against Wydad, he continued: “Football has grown up a lot all around the world. All these teams have individual quality. We have huge, huge respect. We saw what we could see of them. We have a gameplan and we are here to make a good tournament.”
Mohamed Amine Benhachem on facing some of the world’s best sides: “We’re up against formidable teams, and these challenges are no small feat. Yet, our game has sharpened since the transfer window swung open. They revel in possession and confidently impose their rhythm, even against European titans. However, amidst the glaring disparity, we hold our own cards. Our mission is to deliver a rock-solid performance and weave a web of trouble for our rivals.”
