Borja Sainz has been linked with a move away from Norwich City this summer
Borja Sainz’s future at Norwich City is the subject of intense speculation going into the summer transfer window.
It has been reported by Pink Un that Athletic Club are eyeing a move for the Spaniard following the end of the season.
The winger played a crucial role for the Canaries last year, but the team finished a disappointing 13th and will remain in the Championship.
The 24-year-old finished the campaign as the joint-second top scorer in the division with 18 goals to his name, with only Joel Piroe finding the back of the net more frequently.
Here we use estimated wage figures from Capology to see how much Norwich will save every week if Sainz does depart this summer…
Sainz joined Norwich in the summer of 2023 from Turkish side Giresunspor, arriving on a three-year deal.
The Spaniard is now coming into the final 12 months of his contract with the Norfolk outfit, meaning a sale this transfer window might be the only solution to avoid losing him for nothing in 2026.
The average player in the Canaries’ squad is currently paid £13,696 per week, but Sainz earns a small amount more than that at the moment.
The forward is on a deal worth £15,000 per week, meaning he is far from being the best paid player in the squad.
Given his importance to the team last year, he will need a significant increase in salary in order to be convinced to stay.
However, Athletic Club could potentially offer him that pay rise while also giving him the opportunity to compete at a top flight level in Spain.
Ernesto Valverde’s side also earned qualification for the Champions League next season, and recently reached the semi-finals of the Europa League, which will make them an even more attractive proposition.
But it remains to be seen whether a deal can be agreed between them and Norwich in order to lure Sainz to the club.
If Norwich are going to convince Sainz to stay at least one more year then they will surely have to agree to a new contract that also makes him the best paid player at the club.
That honour is currently held by Jack Stacey, with the 29-year-old earning £35,000 per week.
Shane Duffy is the second best player in the Norwich squad, with the Irishman receiving £30,000-a-week after joining the club in the same summer as Sainz.
The next best paid players at Carrow Road are Kenny McLean, Emiliano Marcondes, Angus Gunn and star striker Josh Sargent.
The quartet all earn £25,000 per week for the Championship side, who finished 11 points adrift of the play-off places under Johannes Hoff Thorup.
The Danish coach was dismissed in the final weeks of the season, with no official replacement yet confirmed for the dugout for next season.
The next appointment could also play a role in convincing Sainz to stay, but it will be a challenge given the opportunity a club like Athletic can offer him this summer.
