Lauren Hemp there were points during England’s UEFA EURO 2025 win over the Netherlands where she felt 'back to her best'.
The winger was key to the Lionesses’ emphatic Group D victory, having a huge hand in the third goal of a 4-0 victory, which effectively put the game to bed early in the second half.
Having lost their opening fixture against France, England’s win saw them leapfrog the Dutch into second place ahead of their final group clash against Wales this Sunday at 20:00 (UK).
And Hemp feels there were glimpses of her usual dangerous, dynamic self in that triumph, having returned for the final few weeks of the 2024/25 campaign after five months out with a knee injury.
“Preferably, I’d have liked a whole season to get ready for the tournament but it’s football, there’s injuries all the time,” she reflected in a pre-match press conference.
“I was lucky I gained a few games under my belt coming into the Euros.
“People have good and bad games, things happen in games you can’t sometimes control, but I wanted to make sure I was firing for the next one and I felt confident going into the game on Wednesday.
“I felt back to my best at points, so I hope at the tournament I’ll continue to improve, and we’ll see how far we can get.”
Hemp also commented on the tremendous impact that this summer’s Euros has had on young fans so far in Switzerland.
The Lionesses’ march to becoming European Champions in 2022 propelled the women’s game in the United Kingdom to new levels, with the City winger once again a central figure in that success.
Hosted in the country for the first time, the City and England winger said she’s enjoying the positive atmosphere around the tournament so far.
She also sees the responsibility she and her team-mates have as role models to those young fans as a pleasure and a privilege.
Hemp added: “It’s great to be role models. It’s somethingy ou always hope for, to bring that younger generation with us and show what it takes to be a footballer.
“We’re loving it here and want to show people doing the thing you love can be your job.
“It’s important to show that, when walking round Zurich it’s so nice to see younger girls and boys wanting to be like you.
“For me, it makes me so proud and remembering the journey I had when I was a young girl, wanting to be like Jill Scott and Steph Houghton.
“It’s so nice to see and so great to be able to pave the way and show that your dreams can come true.”
