Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Marc Cucurella was arguably the best left back at Euro 2024 because he was played to his strengths.

Cucurella and his Spain team-mates became European Champions in Berlin on Sunday night with a 2-1 victory over England.

The 25-year-old started every game for Spain bar their last group game against Albania which he was rested for, and was not only one of Spain’s best performers, he was one of the standout performers of the tournament.

Ferdinand praises Cucurella

Cucurella has carried his brilliant end of season form with Chelsea onto the international stage, and he provided the match winning assist in the final for Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner four minutes from time.

The former Brighton man has been praised for his defending throughout the tournament and it’s easy to forget he had just four caps before this Euros and was playing in his first major tournament for Spain.

Gary Neville said at the start of the tournament he felt the left back would be one of the reasons why Spain wouldn’t go all the way, but Cucurella certainly had the last laugh and hit back at Neville on Instagram after the victory.

Cucurella was arguably the best left back at the tournament.

Ferdinand was full of praise for Cucurella at full time, and believes he was the best left back at the tournament which is hard to argue against.

“Cucurella this year was ridiculed by his own supporters at Chelsea, comes here and is arguably the best left-back in the tournament,” he told BBC One.

“He was played to his strengths.”

It’s been some turn around for Cucurella who was booed by Chelsea fans in his first season at the club, but he is now a European Champion and has every chance of starting next season as Enzo Maresca’s first choice left back.

Maresca and Chelsea will be hoping the Spain international can continue his good form into the new season , but first Cucurella will have a well deserved holiday.
