Real Madrid’s frustrating 3-3 draw against Rayo Vallecano was marred by a controversial incident involving Vinicius Junior.
The Brazilian winger was clearly fouled inside the penalty area, but the referee, Martínez Munuera, failed to award a penalty.
The incident occurred in the second half when Vinicius was brought down by Abdul Mumin. The foul was blatant and should have resulted in a penalty kick. However, the referee inexplicably ignored the incident, and VAR failed to intervene.
Real Madrid players and fans were understandably furious with the referee’s decision. The club’s social media accounts also expressed their disappointment with the officiating, with RMTV coming out all guns blazing.
After the match, former Spanish referee Estrada Fernandez took to social media to criticize the performance of the VAR team.
He posted a message on his X profile, stating, “The VAR with the cider.” This sarcastic comment was made on the apparent lack of attention and focus from the VAR officials.
The incident has once again raised questions about the effectiveness of VAR in Spanish football, with big teams such as Barcelona and Real Madrid continuing to point fingers at the association.
Real Madrid, for their part, are now exploring legal actions over the incident, hoping it would yield some result or at least some form of pushback from the refereeing association.
