Izzy Christiansen is confident that Manchester City will be back to their best next season after they failed to win the Premier League for the first time in five years.
Pep Guardiola’s side struggled last year as they failed to win a major trophy for the first time since the Spainiard’s first season at the club in 2016/17.
Since then the Citizens have signed Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait Nouri and Tijani Reijnders to help bolster their squad and get them back to winning ways.
Former Manchester City women’s star Christiansen who played over 50 WSL matches for the side was asked about whether she is more confident that City will perform better this season: “Yeah, I think so. I think Pep looks fresh.
“I think, bringing in his backroom staff, Kolo Toure, he’s got a terrific energy about him, Pep Lijnders, his success record speaks for itself with Liverpool – top, top coach.
“I think the players that they brought in as well, Reijnders and Cherki in particular. I am really excited to see them playing, I think City will be back this season.”
Rodri missed much of last season through an ACL injury he suffered against Arsenal, whilst Phil Foden, Ederson and Mateo Kovacic were also ruled out of Man City’s 4-0 opening weekend win against Wolves.
The former City women’s star backs them to make an impact when they return.
“Man City need Rodri back, but I think they’ve got well-placed replacements in that midfield. They’ve got the likes of Foden to come back into the side, Kovacic.
“Going forward, they look so exciting. Look at the front three, Haaland in particular, supposedly had a quiet season last year, but look at his goal record, it’s unbelievable. Really excited to see them play this season.”
Even though Christiansen says City will improve, she also insists that it will be tough for them to win the title again.
“Looking at the league in general, it’s getting harder and harder to win and we all know that.
“Arsenal have got a really strong side, Newcastle, Chelsea this season as well. Who knows how Spurs will get on under Thomas Frank.
“I think it’s harder to win now, but City will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”
