Coventry City included a sell-on clause as part of the deal that took Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting CP.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres enhanced his reputation as one of the most feared strikers in Europe by scoring a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Man City in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Sweden international joined the Lisbon outfit in the summer of 2023, and he has gone on to enjoy huge success with Sporting CP.

Incredibly, Gyokeres has averaged almost a goal every game in the green-and-white shirt, with his contribution helping Ruben Amorim’s men to the title last season.

The 26-year-old has maintained that form this season, and arguably the highlight of his career came last night, as Gyokeres ran riot as Sporting CP comfortably saw off Man City.

Naturally, that has prompted a lot of speculation surrounding the future of Gyokeres, with the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea among those linked with the number nine in the past.

More recently, it has been claimed that Barcelona are keen on Gyokeres, whilst Man United have been suggested as a potential destination as Amorim prepares to take over at Old Trafford.

It is well-documented that Sporting CP inserted a €100m release clause as part of Gyokeres’ contract, and, given the way he is playing, they will surely be hoping that fee is met if the ex-Brighton man is to leave in either of the next two windows.

So, it seems as though Sporting CP will be set for a major windfall when Gyokeres does leave, as they signed him from Coventry for just €20m.

However, the Sky Blues could also be in line to benefit, as they included a sell-on clause as part of the initial deal that took Gyokeres to Portugal.

It has been revealed that the clause was 15%, but Sporting CP had the option to reduce that by 5% if they wanted to by paying a fee.

Unsurprisingly, it was confirmed in the summer that they had decided to do just that, as they paid Coventry €1m, which means the Championship side now have a 10% sell-on clause.

These clauses usually only apply to any profit, so it will be applied to any fee that Sporting CP receive of over €20m.

Therefore, if Gyokeres’ release clause of €100m was met, Coventry would be in line for an €8m payday, as that is 10% of the €80m profit.

Of course, Sporting CP may negotiate a lower fee with other clubs, but they are still likely to demand a huge sum, so the Midlands side will expect to receive a fairly significant sum whatever happens.

All in all, Gyokeres was an outstanding bit of business for Coventry, as they signed him from Brighton for just £1m, and he went on to be a prolific scorer for the club, before they sold him for a huge profit.

It’s also worth noting that he had entered the final 12 months of his contract when the club sanctioned his sale, so it was a good fee at the time.

Ensuring a sell-on clause was part of the deal was very impressive by those behind the deal, and Coventry will expect to benefit from that in the next year.
