Don Goodman has told FLW his verdict on Sheffield United's interest in Steven Alzate
Don Goodman believes that Steven Alzate is a signing that makes a lot of sense for Sheffield United this summer.
It was reported late last week by The Mirror that the Blades are admirers of the 26-year-old ahead of the new Championship season.
Ruben Selles has made the switch from the Tigers to Bramall Lane, so will know the midfielder well from his time with the Yorkshire outfit last season.
Alzate made 28 appearances in the league, with Hull just barely surviving relegation to League One in his first year with the club.
Goodman has identified Alzate as one of the very few bright spots of Hull’s previous season, suggesting he’s not surprised by Selles’ interest in reuniting with the player.
He believes the Colombia international is the kind of player that managers tend to like, but that the Blades must not only see him as a replacement for Vini Souza.
“It’s not a particular surprise that Ruben Selles would be having a keen eye on Steven Alzate,” Goodman exclusively told Football League World.
“He was one of Hull City’s very, very few successes, really, in what was an incredibly disappointing season at Hull last season.
“He came in and he did pretty well, all told.
“Still in his prime, 26-years-old, and managers tend to like players they worked with before or ones they tend to think are reliable and consistent.
“I think he probably falls into that category.
“In terms of replacing Vini Souza, I think if I’m Sheffield United I’m doing everything you can to keep Vini Souza, and maybe adding Steven Alzate to strengthen it.”
Sheffield United narrowly missed out on promotion to the Premier League last season, so will have their sights on strengthening the squad in order to get over that final hurdle to make a top flight return next year.
Selles wasn’t at Hull for very long, but clearly built a solid relationship with Alzate that he wants to bring to Sheffield United.
The 26-year-old was one of the standout performers in an otherwise underwhelming Tigers side.
His defensive solidity could make for a great addition to the Sheffield United squad for next season.
If a reasonable fee can convince Hull to cash in, then this could be a shrewd bit of business for the Blades, as they look to improve on their third place finish in the table from last season.
