Ex-Liverpool stars send messages of support following death of Fernando Torres' father | OneFootball

Liverpool icon Fernando Torres has been sent strong messages of support from the world of football and beyond after announcing the death of his father, Jose Torres.

The 40-year-old posted the news of his family’s loss across his social networks on Thursday, with Spanish press reporting that Mr Torres had passed away on Wednesday.

The former Atletico Madrid captain was known to be very close to his father, who featured prominently in an Amazon Prime documentary about the player released in 2020.

Mr Torres and his wife, Flori, had three children, Fernando and his older brothers Paz and Israel.

"I couldn’t end this sad day without thanking everyone from the bottom of my heart on behalf of my family and myself for so many expressions of affection and respect towards the death of my father. Dad, I will always keep you present, I love you. D.E.P," the current Atletico Juvenil coach wrote.

In a previous social media post dedicated to his wider family, the goalscoring legend praised his father for his values and for the sacrifices he made in order for his son to pursue a career in football.

“To my father for his example, for not missing a match, for teaching me the values that Atlético later also taught me,” he wrote.

“Thank you for always letting me choose and make mistakes so I can learn from my mistakes. Thank you dad.”

Following Torres’ announcement, former club Atletico posted on Instagram: “Fernando, to you and your family, all the affection in the world in these difficult moments from all the Rojiblanco fans.”

Star players, including former Liverpool team-mates Robbie Keane and Pepe Reina, also posted messages of support.

The likes of Luis Figo, David de Gea and Diego Costa also sent their love and prayers towards the Torres family.

Torres builds bridges with Liverpool fans

Torres played for Liverpool from 2007 until 2011, before leaving in acrimonious circumstances for Chelsea.

The Spanish World Cup winner scored 81 goals in 142 games for the Reds, with a particular fondness for netting in front of the Kop.

He was Liverpool’s player of the season for the 2007-08 campaign, and was twice elected to the Premier League PFA Team of the Year.

There have been recent calls to elect the Spaniard to the Premier League Hall of Fame.

Although his controversial exit affected relationships with Liverpool fans, bridges have since been mended between el Nino and supporters.

He recently returned to Anfield to take part in the Liverpool Legends match against Ajax in March, inevitably scoring in front of the Kop and thrilling fans with a reprisal of his devastating partnership with Steven Gerrard.
