Jamie Carragher most certainly enjoyed the Pilsner on offer at Signal Iduna Park during the Champions League semi-final first leg between Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

The ex-Liverpool defender posted on social media that he was standing in the famous “Yellow Wall” for the game, revelling in the atmosphere and sinking pints of the stuff among Dortmund regulars who will have no doubt been thrilled by the result - a 1-0 win for their side.

The only issue was that the 2005 Champions League winner had to go on air straight after the game for CBS Sports.

“Are you sober enough to do this Jamie?,” asked CBS anchor Kate Abdo from the London studio, where she sat alongside Thierry Henry, Micah Richards and Carragher’s stand-in, Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero.

Carragher was in the frame alongside the former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel, revealing to viewers that he had made the fatal error of drinking on an empty stomach.

"That's actually a good point because I haven't had too much to eat,” he told Abdo. “I had a cheeseburger at about half two, when I got to the hotel. It might explain why I might be slurring my words!

“I've had about eight pints in the Yellow Wall, I've got a new family, a new family of friends, we all look after each other. I gave them a few bob after half-time!"

Spotting the Borussia Dortmund standout Jadon Sancho off-camera, Carragher grabbed the England winger, pulling him close with an arm around the shoulder, before making an attempt to interview him.

“The great thing about the Yellow Wall is the atmosphere,” Carragher told Sancho.

“It’s not the best view in the world, I thought you played well. But Thierry Henry, Alessandro Del Piero and Micah Richards are absolutely raving about your performance.”

Sancho replied: “I appreciate it but it’s not over, we still have to go to Paris and hopefully get the job done there, but I appreciate the compliments.”

The 23-year-old had been outstanding for the Yellow and Blacks, contributing plenty of dribbles and chance creation, and looks miles away from the jaded figure that fell out with Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

Carragher even invited Sancho to join him for a few pints if Dortmund made the final, but the forward played it with a flat bat, stating: “I don’t drink!”

Sancho was voted Player of the Match, with Dortmund winning on the night courtesy of a brilliantly-taken Niclas Fullkrug strike in the first half.

The second leg takes place at PSG’s Parc des Princes next week with the winning team facing either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the final at Wembley.

Whether Carra takes advantage of the French capital's famous cafe culture remains to be seen.
