Everton have taken the first tangible step in their pursuit of Japanese international Takefusa Kubo, with TEAMtalk reporting that the club has reached out to both Real Sociedad and the player’s representatives.
With Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom returning to Leeds United and Napoli respectively after their loan spells, David Moyes has identified the right wing as a critical area of need. Kubo, 24, has emerged as a standout candidate. According to TEAMtalk, “Everton have made contact with Real Sociedad over a potential move for Kubo, as well as the player’s agents.”

Kubo’s talent has long been recognised across Europe. A technically gifted winger with an eye for goal and a tireless work rate, his profile fits the energetic, direct style Moyes is building at Goodison Park. While no bid has yet been made, discussions are underway and an offer is being considered.
Kubo is reportedly open to a move to the Premier League and views it as a step forward in his career. While Sociedad are keen to retain the winger, they are not closing the door entirely. His contract, which runs until 2029, offers the Spanish club a strong negotiating position, but TEAMtalk understands they would “reluctantly consider offers in the region of €40million (£34.6m)” this summer.
That price tag is relatively modest considering the player’s contract status, though the presence of a 50 per cent sell-on clause for Real Madrid, his former club, complicates matters. Sociedad may feel inclined to demand a higher fee to maximise their return, given they would only retain half of any transfer revenue.

Kubo is not without admirers. While Everton have taken the initiative, other Premier League clubs and sides from LaLiga and the Bundesliga are closely monitoring the situation. However, Moyes’ side appear furthest down the track, with TEAMtalk stating: “Everton have done the most work on a transfer to date of any English side.”
Despite that progress, the Toffees are keeping their options open. West Brom’s Tom Fellows remains on the radar, especially after his performances for England’s under-21s, while Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson has also been considered. Yet with Brentford moving decisively for Hutchinson, the focus may soon sharpen further on Kubo.
Kubo represents more than just a replacement. He’s a statement. An agile wide player who can break lines, create chances and press with intensity, he would elevate Everton’s starting XI. Moyes is seeking a squad capable of punching beyond their weight, and this sort of move signals ambition.

The size of the fee and the competition for Kubo’s signature will test Everton’s financial resolve. Yet the intent is clear. As TEAMtalk puts it, “Kubo is viewed as an option that would immediately improve Moyes’ starting XI.”
For Everton, this feels like a refreshing shift in transfer strategy. Too often the club has scrambled for short-term solutions, but this potential move for Kubo signals foresight and quality. At 24, Kubo is at the ideal age to develop further, and he would be arriving with a hunger to prove himself in the Premier League.
The fee might appear steep for Everton, especially given financial constraints, but when compared to recent Premier League prices, £34.6 million for a player of Kubo’s calibre feels justifiable. His flair, creativity and work rate could finally inject balance and pace into an Everton attack that has long relied too heavily on central play.
However, concerns remain. Will the club actually put forward a formal bid or will they let this opportunity pass while rivals pounce? Everton fans have heard similar noises before. This time, there’s cautious optimism that under Moyes, who appreciates players with both ability and application, the club might just follow through.
If they do, Goodison Park could soon be witnessing one of LaLiga’s finest talents in royal blue. That in itself is a reason to hope.
