Yet another new dawn is on the horizon at Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca succeeding Mauricio Pochettino in the home dugout at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino ended 2023/24 on a high note but the season was otherwise disappointing for the Blues. The former Tottenham Hotspur boss guided Chelsea into Europe for 2024/25, meaning the inflated squad at Maresca's disposal could come in handy.

The Blues have been transfer window protagonists since the arrival of Clearlake and it doesn't look like that theme will be changing this summer. By the time the start of the new campaign rolls around, Chelsea's squad could look plenty different from 2023/24.

Chelsea have already made moves in the transfer market and there's bound to be considerable change on the shirt numbers front by the time the start of 2024/25 rolls around.

Last year, Chelsea's squad numbers for the season were confirmed at the start of August. Here's what the current situation looks like.

Players without squad numbers: Kepa Arrizabalaga, Andrey Santos, David Datro Fofana, Malang Sarr, Bashir Humphreys, Gabriel Slonina, Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Omari Kellyman, Tino Anjorin, Angelo.

Shirt numbers will open up for new arrivals by the time Chelsea's squad numbers are officially confirmed for the 2024/25 season, with the club poised to part ways with a whole host of players this summer.

The Blues have already made several additions, including Tosin Adarabioyo, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Marc Guiu. Former Fulham defender Adarabioyo could take the number 6 shirt left by Thiago Silva, who's returned to Brazil having left west London on a free transfer.

Number 22 is currently the most likely option for Dewsbury-Hall, while Guiu, even if he isn't expected to emerge as Chelsea's starting striker right away, could take on the cursed number 9 shirt if Romelu Lukaku leaves. However, the Barcelona academy graduate also has the likes of 30, 31 and 32 available.

What numbers can Premier League players wear?

The Premier League rules when it comes to shirt numbers are far from strict. Any number between one and 99 is allowed as long as it is unique within the squad. 1-30 are typically taken by first-team players, although Phil Foden has kept the 47 shirt since he broke into Manchester City's senior side.

Fellow City youngster Rico Lewis holds the record for the highest number in Premier League history, donning 82. It is also traditional for goalkeepers to wear between 1-13, but not a rule. While the NFL allows for the number 0 jersey to be worn, that is not the case over in the Premier League.

Premier League players can only change their squad number during pre-season or if one is sold or loaned to another club in the January transfer window.

Clubs must submit their confirmed squad list - including shirt numbers - by a specified deadline each year and numbers cannot be changed thereafter. This deadline typically arrives at the start of September following the closure of the summer transfer window. There's a similar deadline after the January window.
