Beth Mead says it was ‘inevitable’ that she and her partner Vivianne Miedema would face each other at Women’s Euro 2025.

The Lionesses have been drawn against Miedema’s Netherlands side in Group D of the tournament in Switzerland.

England and the Netherlands – the last two winners of the Women’s Euros – will meet on Matchday 2, on Wednesday, July 9th.

The pair share similar stories on the international scene. After both winning the Women’s Euros for their respective countries, they both missed the 2023 World Cup after suffering anterior cruciate ligament injuries.

Mead and her girlfriend Miedema have both been selected for their respective squads for Euro 2025. The match on July 9th could have a huge say in who fails to make it out of the group – which also includes France and Wales.

The Arsenal star performed well and scored as England beat Jamaica 7-0 in a friendly on Sunday night.

Beth Mead on facing Vivianne Miedema at Euro 2025

Beth Mead admits that both she and girlfriend Vivianne Miedema were not surprised that England were drawn against the Netherlands at Euro 2025.

As per the BBC, Mead said: “It was inevitable. When the draw was made, we both sat there and said ‘of course that happened’.

“We’re both very, very competitive and professional. We’re both excited for the tournament and to be able to play in it again.”

When asked if they speak about their games against each other, Mead said: “We keep in contact but when it gets closer to our games, we don’t talk football whatsoever. Obviously, we want each other to do well but not against each other.”

How long have Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema been together?

Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema recently celebrated their third anniversary, as their relationship began in 2022.

They both suffered ACL injuries around late 2022 and their bond deepened on and off the pitch, as the pair helped each other through rehabilitation and their return to football.

The pair were teammates at Arsenal until the summer of 2024, when Miedema made the switch to Manchester City.

Reacting to Miedema’s Arsenal exit last summer, Mead joked: “I’ll get some peace and quiet now.

“Obviously, Viv’s a world-class player and I’ll very much miss playing at the club with (her). Obviously she wanted something new, she wanted a new challenge, and I wish her the best – just not when she’s playing against Arsenal.”

Mead and Arsenal went on to win the Women’s Champions League during the 2024-25 season. Miedema joined in the celebrations and expressed her pride for Mead in a message on social media after the game.

Who is expected to go further into Euro 2025 out of Mead and Miedema?

England and the Netherlands are among the strongest teams at Women’s Euro 2025, however, it is not a given that they will make it out of a tough Group D.

France are also one of the strongest contenders to win the tournament and only two teams can advance to the quarter-finals.

According to the top betting sites in the UK, England are 11/8 favourites to win Group D. France are next at 6/4, with the Netherlands third at odds of 5/2 to win the group.

In terms of the overall tournament winner, England are second-favourites behind Spain at odds of 3/1. France are third-favourites at 9/4, with the Netherlands sixth at 16/1.
