As Aston Villa prepare for one of their most significant European nights in recent memory, the spotlight shifts to Villa Park where the Premier League underdogs must overturn a daunting 3-1 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final. Having taken the lead in the first leg, Unai Emery’s side ultimately found themselves overwhelmed in Paris, undone by PSG’s attacking quality and a late goal from Nuno Mendes that felt like a gut punch.
For Villa, it’s now or never. A semi-final spot is within reach, but they must be perfect — and hope PSG are not.
Aston Villa’s home form in Europe under Emery offers genuine encouragement. Just one defeat in 13 home fixtures speaks to a team that grows in stature in front of its own crowd. Notably, this season they’ve claimed scalps against both Bayern Munich and Juventus — results that reinforce the narrative that Villa Park is no easy place to visit, even for Europe’s elite.

But PSG are not just any elite side. They’re a juggernaut now fully focused on the Champions League after dispatching Liverpool in the previous round with brutal efficiency. Luis Enrique’s team carries a blend of flair and tactical discipline, and in Ousmane Dembélé they possess a gamebreaker Villa failed to contain in the first leg. If Villa are to stand a chance, their first task is simple in theory but monumental in practice: keep Dembélé quiet.
Emery could opt for a more adventurous setup after playing conservatively in Paris. Ollie Watkins is tipped to lead the line, and Marco Asensio may feature more prominently against his parent club. Donyell Malen remains ineligible, and Leon Bailey is a doubt, but otherwise, Villa boast a full squad.
For PSG, the return of Marquinhos after suspension provides further steel in defence, while Desire Doué has surely earned another start after impressing in the first leg. Bradley Barcola is likely to remain an option off the bench.

Luis Enrique has few reasons to tinker with a winning formula, especially after his side showed their ability to dominate possession and strike with venom on the counter — something they demonstrated not just in Paris, but also in their away win at Anfield.
Had Aston Villa left the French capital with a narrower loss — say, 2-1 — this fixture might have carried a different tone. But the late Mendes goal changed everything. Now Villa must chase the game from the off, which could play into PSG’s hands.
Villa’s need to attack will leave gaps — and few teams exploit space as ruthlessly as PSG. Expect a spirited effort from the hosts, perhaps even a goal to spark hope. But over 90 minutes, the French side’s class and composure should see them through.
Prediction: PSG to win 2-1 on the night, 5-2 on aggregate.
