Axel Disasi’s Chelsea adventure looks set to reach a turning point, with Foot Mercato reporting that AS Monaco are keen on bringing the French international back to Ligue 1. Two years after leaving the Principality for over €45 million, Disasi could be on the move again as his Stamford Bridge career stalls.
Monaco’s interest stems from defensive needs following the departure of Wilfried Singo to Galatasaray. The French club are exploring a loan deal, seeing the return of their former centre-back as both a practical and symbolic signing. Negotiations with Chelsea are underway, but the Premier League side prefer a permanent exit rather than another temporary move.
Disasi’s career in England has been mixed. He featured prominently in his debut season, playing 44 matches and showing glimpses of authority in defence. Yet, as Foot Mercato note, his second season was a stark contrast, with only six appearances in six months and occasional absences from the matchday squad.

A loan spell at Aston Villa offered a chance for redemption, but the Frenchman again failed to cement a regular role, making only 10 appearances under Unai Emery. This inconsistency has convinced Chelsea’s hierarchy that a clean break may be the best option.
For the Blues, offloading Disasi would reduce squad congestion and recoup funds amid continued heavy investment. The club are not looking to repeat past mistakes of stockpiling centre-backs without providing clear roles.
While Monaco are pressing to bring him back, English clubs are monitoring developments closely. Foot Mercato report: “It remains to be seen whether Monaco will be convincing enough to change Chelsea’s mind, and whether the player is keen on a return to Ligue 1. In England, Bournemouth are still following the player, as are Aston Villa, who see this deal as a market opportunity, especially if the Blues are desperate to part with him.”
Bournemouth view Disasi as a defensive reinforcement with Premier League experience, while Villa’s continued interest highlights Unai Emery’s admiration for his attributes, even if his previous spell was inconsistent.
For Disasi himself, the coming days will be decisive. A return to Monaco would provide familiarity and the chance to reboot in an environment where he previously thrived. Staying in England could offer another shot at proving himself in the Premier League, though competition remains fierce.

At 27, he should be entering the peak years of his career. The direction he chooses will likely define whether he reclaims his status as a regular starter at the highest level or continues as a squad option battling for minutes.
For Chelsea supporters, the situation around Axel Disasi feels like another chapter in the club’s long-standing challenge with defensive recruitment. The Frenchman arrived with expectation, yet inconsistency and squad depth quickly diminished his opportunities. Supporters recognise his qualities; strong in duels, commanding in the air and capable of playing out from the back, but the harsh reality is that his impact has not matched his price tag.
A return to Monaco makes sense, especially as he knows the environment and would likely slot straight into the starting XI. For Chelsea, the priority is trimming a bloated squad. Fans would prefer a permanent deal to avoid repeating the cycle of loans, which rarely benefit either the player or the club in the long term.
Bournemouth’s interest highlights how Disasi is still respected within the Premier League, and a move there would keep him under English scrutiny. Villa’s position is intriguing, as he has already had a short spell without much influence. From a supporter’s perspective, most would back his exit if the fee is fair and reinvested wisely. The feeling is simple: Chelsea need clarity, and Disasi deserves stability.
