Celtic fans are hoping for a big summer transfer window from the club after a lack of activity in the winter. We already know one player who will be joining the club ahead of next season though as it has been announced that the Hoops have agreed a pre-contract extension with Kieran Tierney, who will be making a return to his boyhood club.
Tierney had left Celtic in the summer of 2019 for Arsenal. And he has had an up-and-down time at the London club so far.
Arsenal passed on the chance to extend Tierney's contract by another year earlier, meaning he will become a free agent in the summer. Celtic made the most of that opportunity and agreed a pre-contract with the Scottish left-back.
That does not mean that Tierney has not had a role in Mikel Arteta's plans ahead of his summer exit. Arsenal did not green light a loan move to Celtic in the winter and the left-back has been getting game time here and there for the London club lately.
Tierney was brought on as a substitute in Arsenal's recent 7-1 win over PSV. And he had a different role on the night.
Instead of playing in his natural left-back position, Tierney was used as a winger. And that is a role he has the qualities to thrive in. It remains to be seen if Arteta features him more heavily there in the last few months of the season before he leaves the club in the summer.
That will be interesting for Celtic as well and does open up another way that Brendan Rodgers can use Tierney next season. He can play all the way up that left flank and be one of the best players in Scotland while doing so.
