Diego Simeone faced the media following Atletico Madrid’s painful Champions League exit on penalties, and his frustration was evident.
The Argentine manager was visibly agitated, particularly when discussing the controversial decision to disallow Julian Alvarez’s penalty.
Simeone’s anger stemmed from the belief that his team had given everything on the pitch. Atletico fought with intensity, showing resilience against a side packed with world-class talent.
“We played an incredible game, with a lot of strength and effort. We controlled a team with great players,” he noted.

One of the major talking points was the incident involving Julian Alvarez’s penalty. Simeone could not hide his disbelief at the decision to rule it out.
He appeared to challenge anyone to prove that Alvarez had made contact with the ball twice, showing his frustration with the officials.
It was a moment that only fuelled the growing tension, as Atletico felt that they were on the receiving end of another controversial call in a high-stakes European tie.
“Raise your hand if you see that Julian touched the ball twice! Raise your hand! Nobody raises it,” he added.
Beyond the penalty debate, Simeone also had to address suggestions that his side had lost to one of the weakest Real Madrid teams in recent history.

He was quick to dismiss that notion, reminding everyone that Madrid have consistently delivered in the Champions League. Regardless of their form at any given moment, they always seem to find a way to progress.
“You’re being very harsh on a team with some players… they’ve won the Champions League twice. They’re possibly the best team in the world. The Liverpool manager said so.”
Ultimately, Atletico once again fell to Real Madrid in the Champions League, a familiar script that has played out multiple times. Simeone’s frustration was clear, not just because of the result but because of how close they came.
Yet, as has often been the case, Real Madrid found a way to edge past them, leaving Atletico heartbroken and their manager visibly exasperated.
“Real Madrid eliminated us as they almost always do in the Champions League but they have a hard time,” he explained.
