Arsenal have officially announced the signing of Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP in a deal worth up to €73 million (£63 million).
The 27-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with the Gunners and will wear the iconic number 14 shirt, famously donned by Thierry Henry.
Gyokeres’ arrival comes after weeks of intense negotiations. This included some last-minute wrangling over performance-related add-ons before he was granted permission to travel to London for his medical.
He enjoyed a stunning 2024-25 season with Sporting, where he netted an extraordinary 54 goals in 52 appearances.
Gyokeres helped the team win back-to-back Primeira Liga titles and a domestic cup. He also narrowly missed out on the Golden Shoe award to Kylian Mbappe.
Across his two seasons in Portugal, he amassed 97 goals in 102 games, cementing his status as one of Europe’s top marksmen.
“I just felt that it was the right club for me,” Gyokeres told Arsenal’s website.
“What I heard from Mikel (Arteta) and Andrea (Berta) when I was speaking with them, and just what I’ve seen in the past years, how they’ve been playing football.
“When I was playing against Arsenal last season, I could really feel it was a very strong team and very difficult to play against.”
Gyokeres is Arsenal’s sixth signing of the summer transfer window, but more arrivals could be on the way to the Emirates Stadium before the deadline.
Arsenal are still in the market for one more attacker and are expected to intensify their efforts to sign Eberechi Eze over the next couple of weeks.
