Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa has won two Serie A titles now with Napoli and has played a prominent role in both. But so much of his hardwork has barely been noticed over a longer term.
During the 2022/23 season, the Cameroonian’s contributions were overshadowed by those of Kim Min-Jae, Victor Osimhen and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. This season, the exploits of Romelu Lukaku and Scott McTominay have garned front-page attention.
Zambo Anguissa has remained in the background and he is perhaps the only player from the initial title winning season who has either improved or has stayed at the same level, performance-wise.
This season specifically, the midfielder hasn’t just been involved in 11 goals, but he has played a variety of roles. At times, he was used as an auxiliary right-winger. At other times, he was a box-crashed alongside McTominay. Many times, he was also acting as a receiver deep in midfield and helping in dictating play.
He took responsibility, regardless of what was asked of him. The goals are only a bonus. Beyond scoring in a key game against Bologna, he scored against Juventus. Earlier in the season when things seemed a bit awry for Napoli and they were heading to a 2-2 draw against Parma, he scored an all-important stoppage time winner.
Under Spalletti, his role was more focused and defined and even then, he drove the midfield and attack forward with his burst and progression on the ball.
This summer could bring about his exit to the Middle East or to the Premier League, but he has now immortalised himself in Partenopei folklore.
