Phil Parkinson’s side came second in League One, earning them automatic promotion after previously coming second in League Two in 2024 and winning the National League in 2023.

The Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have played a crucial role in the club’s rise to the second tier.

The pair took over the Welsh outfit in November 2020, and have been heavily involved in Wrexham’s growth, which has led to McElhenney claiming he wants to increase the capacity of the Racecourse Ground to 55,000 seats in the future.

Following promotion from League One, McElhenney confirmed that Wrexham have a plan to increase the capacity of the Racecourse Ground in the years to come.

He is hoping to reach a capacity of between 45,000 to 55,000 by building on each of the four sides of the existing stadium, rather than by starting from scratch.

“We have a plan in place right now that would eventually work from stand to stand, so eventually you get all four sides,” said McElhenney, via Collider.

“It's hard to say for sure, but we think we could get between 45-55,000 people in there.”

Compared to the stadiums currently competing in the Championship, that would make the Racecourse Ground the biggest in the division.

The current leader is the Stadium of Light, with Sunderland able to host up to 48,707 (all figures courtesy of Transfermarkt).

Hillsborough and Elland Road are the next highest from the 2024/25 Championship season, with Sheffield Wednesday’s stadium capable of hosting 39,859 while Leeds can hold up to 37,890 in their home ground.

Middlesbrough and Derby County round out the top five, with the Riverside’s capacity equalling 33,746 and Pride Park’s maximum occupancy being 33,597.

Biggest Premier League stadiums

If the Racecourse Ground reached a capacity of 55,000, then it would rank as the seventh largest of the teams currently competing in the Premier League.

Manchester United’s Old Trafford remains the largest, with a capacity of 74,879, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in second with 62,850.

The London Stadium is the third biggest ground in the top flight, with West Ham able to host 62,500 supporters at their home games.

Anfield and the Emirates round out the top five, with Liverpool and Arsenal also capable of over 60,000 in their respective stadiums.

But Wrexham are not the only club in the English football system considering expanding their home ground.

Everton are set to move into their brand new stadium for the start of next season, with the Hill Dickinson Stadium reportedly capable of hosting 52,888, per the BBC.

confirmed by the club, while the Midlands outfit are looking to increase Villa Park’s capacity to 50,000.
