Former France U21 international striker Amine Gouiri (23) is set to switch his national team allegiance to Algeria in the coming weeks. As reported by La Gazette du Fennec, Algeria national team boss Djamel Belmadi has announced that the Stade Rennais winger’s case is “settled.” “From an administrative point of view, I’m not gonna lie to you. It’s settled“, said the 2019 AFCON winner.
Gouiri played for France’s youth teams and was part of Sylvain Ripoll’s squad for the Under-21 European Championships last summer. Gouiri is expected to emulate his former Lyon teammate Houssem Aouar in switching his national team allegiance from France to Algeria, although the Olympique Lyonnais youth product, unlike Aouar, has never been called up by Didier Deschamps’ France senior squad.
Gouiri may be called up by Belmadi for the next international break in November where Les Verts will take on Somalia and Mozambique as part of their campaign to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. The striker may also be called up by Belmadi for the upcoming AFCON next winter, meaning he’d miss a handful of games with Stade Rennais.
