On matchday 16 in Serie A, AC Milan will face Genoa at 20:45 CET on Sunday 15 December at San Siro, where the Club’s 125th anniversary will also be celebrated. Coach Fonseca’s men are ready to give it everything against Vieira’s side. As the league intensifies, every point will be crucial as the Rossoneri look to keep pace with the top sides. With the team looking to bounce back from their defeat in Bergamo, here is our Match Preview to introduce tonight’s clash.
LATEST FROM MILANELLO AC Milan head into the match on the back of a mixed period. The Rossoneri lost 2-1 to Atalanta last time out in Serie A but came away with a 2-1 midweek victory over Crvena Zvezda in the Champions League. Domestically, the Diavolo have alternated between good performances and a few missteps, and the aim is to find consistency and regain solidity in defence. The support of the fans will be vital to push our lads towards a positive result. Pulisic, Loftus-Cheek and Musah are all unavailable, while Morata should be named on the bench. A couple of youngsters could play, with Jiménez and Liberali waiting in the wings. Fofana is one booking away from suspension.
“AC Milan is turning 125, and we need to live up to the history of this great Club,” said Coach Fonseca in his pre-match press conference. “I spoke to the team, I looked the players in the eye and told them what I wanted. We faced and solved the problem in the locker room, working well together: we are a family. Now we move forward, and we will be ready for Genoa. We often seem like a rollercoaster, and the problem is a mental one: we have to face every match with the same motivation, without reservations.”
LATEST FROM GENOA Genoa arrive at San Siro on the back of a five-game unbeaten run. The Rossoblù, who have shown real determination and solidity recently, drew 0-0 against Torino in their last outing after previously beating Udinese 2-0. The match at San Siro represents a chance for Vieira’s side to further build on their progress. Genoa are expected to line up in a 4-3-3 formation with Leali between the sticks, Pinamonti up front and the likes of Bani, Badelj, Frendrup and Zanoli in between. Of course, they also have former Rossoneri Balotelli in their squad. Vásquez is back available from suspension, but Messias is out.
“We’ll certainly be up against a strong side with an excellent coach,” said Vieira. “We’ve prepared in such a way that we can compete, but we’ll need to have a strong mindset and display character. We need to try and score through our play because we know AC Milan’s qualities and don’t want to go to Milan just to defend the whole time. We want to cause them problems when we have the ball, too. I’ve always had a positive relationship with AC Milan, for whom I had the fortune to play alongside fantastic players.”
