London City Lionesses have announced the double signing of former Manchester United captain Katie Zelem and Matildas star Alanna Kennedy. Both join for an undisclosed fee from Angel City FC ahead of London City’s historic first Women’s Super League season.
Zelem moves back to her native England after almost two seasons with Angel City FC. The midfielder has amassed more than 130 WSL appearances throughout her career so far. At Man United, she captained the team to their first major trophy, winning the FA Cup against Tottenham Hotspur. Zelem has also won the WSL with Liverpool and was part of the England side that finished as runners-up at the Women’s World Cup in 2023.
Having played in three leagues globally, including a title-winning year in Italy, the 29-year-old’s leadership, experience and set-piece mastery will be a stellar addition to London City.
Speaking on her move, Zelem said: “I think being the first independent team in the WSL is an amazing achievement, it feels like since I joined the league, the growth in women’s football has been exceptional. I really can’t wait to be a part of this club. Hopefully I can bring a lot of experience, knowledge and some good football to the team.”
Kennedy, who has started 16 of Angel City’s 17 NWSL matches this season, also has a wealth of WSL experience. The defender joined Tottenham on loan when the NWSL paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. The signing was soon made permanent, and the 30-year-old spent a further season in North London before joining Manchester City. There, Kennedy won silverware with the 2022 League Cup against Emma Hayes’ Chelsea side.
Internationally, the defender has been capped 139 times by Australia. She has also played in six major tournaments, including a home World Cup in 2023. Just like Zelem, Kennedy brings a wealth of experience needed for the top flight next season.
Kennedy also expressed her excitement for joining the club: “I’m really excited to be part of such an amazing club with great impressions. I can’t wait to meet everyone and get the season started. The ambitions of the club and what they want to do – win trophies and titles – as a player that’s what you want to do.
“It’s something that is going to take time to build, I’m excited to be a part of the early stages of this project and hopefully we can have a lot of success this season.”
With these arrivals, London City continue to show their intent ahead of their debut WSL season. The pair join a growing list of impressive new recruits including Jana Fernandez and Danielle van de Donk. Together, these signings underline their ambition to compete at the highest level in their first year among England’s elite.
