West Ham United’s struggles deepened after a third successive defeat, this time a 3-2 loss to Wolves in the EFL Cup, leaving Graham Potter searching for answers and harmony within his ranks. Two late goals from Jorgen Strand Larsen sealed the Hammers’ fate, amplifying pressure on a manager whose tenure is already under scrutiny.
Jarrod Bowen, wearing the captain’s armband, found himself at the centre of controversy after heading towards the travelling supporters post-match to applaud them. What started as a gesture of appreciation turned into confrontation when something from the stands seemed to trigger a reaction. Stewards intervened before tensions could escalate further.

Within 45 minutes Bowen took to Instagram to issue an apology. “Apologies to the fans for tonight’s reaction,” he wrote. “I’m someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club. We ride through the bad times together and I’ll see you all Sunday.”
Potter struck a conciliatory tone, urging everyone connected with the club to remain united during this turbulent period. “We’re all in pain so we need everybody to help. We need everybody’s support. We need to push forward and on to the next match. The team’s suffering at the moment, we all are, we’re all hurting. I can assure you no-one’s happy,” he said.

The head coach praised the travelling support and backed his skipper. “Our supporters have been fantastic,” Potter added. “They are hurting because of the results we’ve had and Jarrod obviously cares about the club and the team. It’s just an exchange of views by people who care. Everyone is hurting, rightly so because we haven’t had the results we’d like. Jarrod has been a fantastic captain and servant for the club.”
The defeat at Molineux compounds a miserable run for West Ham. The Hammers have now conceded 11 goals in three games, including a 5-1 defeat by Chelsea last week. Potter has managed only five wins in 22 matches since replacing Julen Lopetegui in January. Next up is a daunting Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest, a fixture that could further define Potter’s future.
