Amidst all of the excitement of the USMNT playing in the Gold Cup semifinals on Wednesday, we shouldn’t forget that the USWNT is also in action.

Emma Hayes leads her team in its final match of the summer. The Americans will host Canada in the Allstate Continental Clasico. While just a friendly, there are always bragging rights and something to prove when these two teams cross paths.

The USWNT is hoping to make it five straight victories. After knocking off China and Jamaica in the previous window, the U.S. has a pair of 4-0 wins over Ireland over the last week. The USWNT has outscored its opponents 15-0 across those four wins, making a fifth straight win and a fifth straight clean sheet the goal on Wednesday.

As for the Canadians, they’ve put together a three-game winning streak in friendly matches over the past two windows. In late May and early June, Canada notched a pair of wins over Haiti. The Canadians followed up those victories this past Friday with a 4-1 win over Costa Rica. Needless to say, playing the U.S. will be a big step in competition for manager Casey Stoney's Canucks.

It’s been over a year since the U.S. and Canada played one another, and more than two years since either team came out on top. Both a Women’s Gold Cup game in March 2024 and a SheBelieves Cup game in April 2024 ended in a 2-2 draw between the U.S. and Canada. While the U.S. won the subsequent penalty shootout both times, those games continued a growing trend of Canada being a thorn in the side of the USWNT, including a 1-0 Canadian victory in the Olympic semifinals in 2021.

USWNT vs Canada projected lineups

Hayes made 11 changes to the starting lineup between the first and second games against Ireland, so it’s anybody’s guess what she’ll do against Canada. Conventional wisdom says that she will largely revert to the lineup from the first Ireland victory. However, she could also reward the players who stood out in the second match.

Meanwhile, with Canada playing just two matches during this window, Stoney may feel pressure to make significant changes from the team that beat Costa Rica. On the other hand, beating the U.S. always means a lot to Canada, so look for the Canucks to put together a strong starting XI.

USWNT projected lineup (4-2-3-1, right to left)

Claudia Dickey (GK) - Avery Patterson, Emily Sonnett, Naomi Girma, Izzy Rodriguez - Sam Coffey, Claire Hutton - Ally Sentnor, Rose Lavelle, Alyssa Thompson - Lynn Biyendolo

Canada projected lineup (4-2–3-1, right to left)

Kailen Sheridan (GK) - Marie Levasseur, Vanessa Gilles, Shelina Zadorsky, Ashley Lawrence - Julia Grosso, Simi Awujo - Adriana Leon, Jessie Fleming, Nichelle Prince - Jordyn Huitema

USWNT vs Canada prediction

This may be a friendly match, but one has to think that Canada will try to set an early tone by pressing high and going hard into challenges. They have nothing to lose, so the Canadians might as well go for it. That should lead to an interesting game.

However, while the U.S. has been stable defensively in recent windows, Canada has struggled to keep clean sheets, even against teams like Haiti and Costa Rica. That doesn’t bode well for Canada, especially with the firepower the U.S. has showcased in recent games. The likes of Lynn Biyendolo, Alyssa Thompson, Ally Sentnor and others have all looked like capable goal-scorers.

While this game won’t be as easy as the recent wins over Ireland, the USWNT has too much attacking prowess not to find the back of the net at least a couple of times. Hayes seems to be finding her groove with this team and pulling all the right strings, which should result in a U.S. win, even if the Canadians give them a run for their money.
