It is no secret that Fermin Lopez’s stock has gone through the roof since he broke into the Barcelona first-team setup last season.

The 21-year-old La Masia ace enjoyed a fine debut campaign during which he managed to score 11 goals in over 40 appearances, which in turn helped him break into the Spain squad with whom he won the UEFA Euro 2024.

Not stopping at that, Fermin was also a part of Spain’s Olympics squad and helped them win the gold medal with six goals from six matches.

Tottenham wanted Fermin

Naturally, Fermin’s exploits for club and country caught the attention of several teams across Europe during the summer transfer window.

Indeed, according to journalist Miguel Rico, Fermin was a subject of transfer interest from many English clubs, with Tottenham Hotspur at the forefront.

As per the report, the north London club are believed to have made an approach for the Barcelona attacking midfielder and asked for his price.

Fermin is protected by a €400 million release clause in his contract which runs until 2027. While reaching that sum was always out of the question, Spurs were willing to shell out a big fee for the Barcelona starlet.

However, the Blaugrana closed the doors on Fermin’s exit, with both the player and the club being eager to continue their partnership.

Having done so, Barcelona are now taking the first steps to improve Fermin’s contract and bring his salary up to the level of his status within the squad and that of a European champion and an Olympic champion.

Fermin is currently out of action due to an injury he picked up last week while away with the Spanish Under-21 squad. The youngster was expected to be out for three weeks, meaning he could return before the end of this month.
