Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son has released a statement surrounding an altercation he had while on international duty with South Korea.
Heung-Min Son has opened up on an altercation between himself and PSG playmaker Lee Kang-In during South Korea’s Asian Cup campaign. The Tottenham captain, who is also the skipper for his nation, was looking to lead his team towards glory.
The Taegeuk Warriors have won the Asian Cup twice in their history, though the last time was over 60-years ago in 1960. Plenty of talented squads have been and gone since then, with triumph just out of their reach.
The 2023 edition of the competition brought high hopes for South Korea once more, though they weren’t playing at their fluid best. It all culminated in a shock defeat to Jordan at the semi-final stage, ending the campaign.

Shortly after the ending of the Asian Cup, reports started to emerge of a possible rift in the South Korean dressing room. It was claimed that Heung-Min Son was caught in an altercation with PSG’s Lee Kang-in – with the Tottenham captain injuring his finger in the process.

Since making his return to Tottenham, Heung-Min Son has posted a statement on his Instagram on the situation and apologised. In a post translated by Instagram, it reads: “[Lee] Kang-in sincerely reflected on himself and apologised to all the players on the team, including me.
“When I was young, I made a lot of mistakes and looked bad, but I think I can be where I am now because of the warm advice and teachings of good seniors. We will take special care of Kang-in to ensure that Kang-in does not do this wrong thing again, so that all of us players can grow as a senior and a captain of the national team.
“I also did well for my actions, I think it was an act that could be envied enough without thinking. However, I am of the opinion that it is one of the essence of the claim to act like that for the team, so I will act for the team even if I am put in the same situation again. But from now on, I will try to understand my teammates more wisely and wisely.
“Kang-in is having a hard time after that incident. Although football is loved a lot, we sincerely apologise for causing such a fuss and we will work harder to make our Korean national team grow more this season. Once again, as the captain of the Korean national team, I sincerely apologise.”

Lee Kang-in has released his own statement in an apology for leaving the national team dinner early. He said, via the BBC: “That day, I did something I should never have done at dinner. I deeply regret it.
“I promised to have a more proper attitude and courtesy when dealing with my seniors and colleagues. I would like to thank them once again for accepting and embracing my apology…I knew in my head how important this tournament was to Son, but I didn’t show that with my behaviour. And I think that’s where all the problems began.”
