Prominent during the fourth matchday of this Champions League win against Bologna (0-1) with a goal in the final minutes, the German was elected MVP of the match by the fans on the AS Monaco App.
“I could imagine myself with this man of the match trophy”, he said with a smile post-match in the mixed zone. On Tuesday night, Thilo Kehrer was in fact voted best player of the match by UEFA after the a victory acquired in the last minutes away to Bologna (0-1), during the 4th matchday of the Champions League, a victory to which the German contributed greatly since he scored the only goal of the game.
I was told it was done in the Pippo Inzaghi way, but I don't think I'm there yet (smile). On this chance, I find myself quite well placed and I had some luck so I'm very happy.
It was a real striker’s goal, in “Pippo Inzaghi” mode! Already a scorer at Auxerre and Rennes, the defender knows how to sniff out good shots from corners. Indeed, thanks to the set piece delivered by Aleksandr Golovin, and knocked on by Breel Embolo, the defender, unmarked in the area, read perfectly the trajectory of the ball to score the winning goal in the last minutes of the game (0-1, 87′).
The German also scored the first goal of his career in the Champions League. And as Opta points out, Thilo was involved in two goals in his last two Champions League matches with the club from the Principality (1 goal and 1 assist against Belgrade), while he had never been decisive in his first 22 in the competition (20 matches with Paris-SG, 2 with Monaco).
He was also the author of a high-flying performance at the heart of the central defense with his partner Wilfried Singo, keeping a clean sheet, as he stood out for his clearances (4), his interceptions (2), his duels won (3 out of 6) and his 42 successful passes out of 54 attempted (78%).
I am happy with the victory, I think it is above all a team effort, we were as a unit, we were motivated to win this match after the two defeats in the league. There was no fear of not winning the three points.
As for his Ivorian teammate, he won 9 of the 12 duels played and was close to opening the scoring in the first half, also from a corner, but his goal was disallowed for a foul following contact with the goalkeeper (19′), before making a superb defensive tackle on Santiago Castro (50′).
It was therefore a very impressive performance for the German and a goal which would condemn the Bolognese to defeat (0-1). Credited with a 7 in the newspaper L’Équipe, like Wilfried Singo and Soungoutou Magassa, the central defender was also named POTM by UEFA as well as MVP of the match by you, the fans on the AS Monaco App with 64% of the vote, ahead of Singo (24%) and Maghnes Akliouche (6%). Bravo Thilo! 🏆
