Manchester United upset the betting books in remarkable fashion when they won the FA Cup final against Manchester City 2-1.

Not only was the form guide not kind to them, but the outside noise around the club made it impossible to look beyond one winner only, and that was City.

If just that narrative wasn’t enough to put into perspective what United have managed to achieve today, perhaps another stat will.

Rodri, the City defensive midfield lynchpin, has had his unbeaten streak at City broken by United which stood at an unbelievable 74 games.

That means, that for almost two full league seasons, Rodri hadn’t lost a game when he put on a Manchester City shirt.

Considering how much Arsenal’s invincible season is still celebrated as a major accomplishment, this stat is remarkable.

In an even sweeter moment for United, this win was sealed by a homegrown player in Kobbie Mainoo, who City had been trying to lure to their club for a while.

Perhaps poetically, both of United’s goalscorers were effectively academy teenagers, even if Garnacho came to the club at the age of 16.

Rodri is widely recognised as the best defensive midfielder in the world and this fact shows that City are unbeatable when he’s in the team.

Even City, as a whole unit, were unbeaten for the last 35 games in all competitions, minus the penalty shootout loss against Real Madrid which counts as a draw in the books.

United weren’t just underdogs for this game. Considering the whole narrative, they were perhaps less fancied than Coventry City when they played United in the semifinal.

Ultimately, Ten Hag and his squad will feel vindicated about their messages that this is a good team when players are available.

After all, vindication doesn’t come much better than stopping a 74-game unbeaten juggernaut!
