Ricardo Sá Pinto is back in football and in typical fashion, has shown fearless determination in approaching his return to Iran as new coach of Tehran giants Esteghlal.
The much-travelled manager spent a year in charge of the Blue Boys during the 2022-23 season, winning the domestic Super Cup and reaching the Iranian Cup final. Since then, Sá Pinto has enjoyed stints with APEOL, where he won the Cypriot title, as well as Raja Casablanca in Morocco.
The decision to return to Iran is one that has drawn particular attention given the recent war with Israel last month. Sá Pinto agreed to the move shortly before the ceasefire between the countries began on June 25, but many have been surprised by the Portuguese’s willingness to take the post given uncertainty in the region.
"It is with great joy that I return to the beautiful country of Iran," said the 45-time Seleção international. "I return to one of the homes I've had in the world of football - and the truth is, I've had few homes like Esteghlal. I waited three years for this opportunity. It was a difficult road, and returning here wasn't easy at all.
"Even though we know we're living in difficult times, I believe that peace will return and normal life will return to the Iranian people - a people who deserve tranquillity and stability. This return isn't just a simple return. It's a mission. A difficult mission, far beyond simply coaching a team. I had an unfinished dream. And now, I'm back to complete it.
"The road ahead will be tough. We can say we have a real battle ahead of us. We need to strengthen the team, but what we already have is unity - and that's the most important thing.
"I ask everyone to stand by the team, to support the players, and to be united. If that happens, we will be able to defeat all opponents and win all titles. This is my mission. I came to win."
With a reputation as a coach with worldwide experience, Sá Pinto has coached in Serbia, Greece, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Poland, Brazil, Türkiye, Cyprus and Morrocco, as well as spells in his homeland with Sporting, Belenenses, Braga and Moreirense. Having struggled to collect many titles, lifting the Cypriot title with APOEL last year felt a landmark moment for the fiery Portuguese.
