Slovenia were able to hold onto a goalless draw against England in their third and final group stage match to secure their spot in the knock-out stages. Who will they face in the Round of 16 at Euro 2024?

Although it may not have been pretty, Slovenia will remember Portugal winning Euro 2016 despite drawing all three group stage games and they’ve followed in their footsteps in terms of group results at the very least, drawing 1-1 with Denmark and Serbia before grinding out a 0-0 with tournament favourites England to set up a Round of 16 tie with Portugal in Frankfurt.

Group C – Matchweek One

Slovenia showed their potential in the second half of their opening match, fighting hard to get back into the game after going 1-0 down to a brilliantly taken Christian Eriksen strike in the first half against Denmark. Erik Janza’s deflected effort in the latter stages of the game turned out to be enough to earn the Dragons a deserved point.

Group C – Matchweek Two

Slovenia very nearly confirmed their spot in the knock-out stages in Munich as Zan Karnicnik gave them a second-half lead against Serbia on Matchday Two. Despite their best efforts, Matjaz Kek’s men were unable to hold onto the three points as a 95th minute Luka Jovic equaliser ensured the spoils were shared.

Group C – Matchweek Three

While England fans were understandably disappointed once again with their team’s performance on Matchday Three, credit has to go to Slovenia for a dogged defensive display in this game. The 0-0 draw that they worked hard to earn was enough to send the Dragons through in third place.

Round of 16

Portugal are the opponents for Slovenia in the Round of 16 and that represents a very tough challenge as the Selecao boast one of the most talent-packed squads in the tournament. Roberto Martinez’s men showed their quality in their victories over Turkey and Czech Republic in Group F, but they also showed their vulnerability in a 2-0 defeat to Georgia in their final game. What’s more, the Dragons beat Portugal 2-0 in a friendly clash between the two sides back in March.
